140 Years of Flavor: Dr Pepper’s Legacy of Innovation

For more than 140 years, Dr Pepper has captivated taste buds with its unique flavor and pioneering spirit. From its humble beginnings in a small Texas drugstore to the second most popular soda in America, the brand’s story is one of creativity, passion, and a never-ending pursuit of refreshment.

A Taste Born in Texas

Born in 1885 at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas, Dr Pepper is the oldest major soft drink brand in the U.S. A young pharmacist named Charles Alderton loved the medley of fruit syrup aromas that filled the store and set out to create a drink to capture that essence. After meticulous experimentation, he landed on a blend unlike anything else—a drink that would soon become known as Dr Pepper.

Content with his pharmacy work, Alderton had no plans to take the drink to market. Fortunately, store owner Wade Morrison and beverage chemist Robert S. Lazenby recognized its potential. In 1891, they officially established the Dr Pepper Company, laying the foundation for a brand that would satisfy generations to come.

Dr Pepper’s Early Growth and Cultural Impact

Dr Pepper’s big break came in 1904 when Lazenby introduced it to nearly 20 million attendees at the St. Louis World’s Fair. The drink’s unique flavor profile caught on quickly and began to cement its place in American culture.

In the 1940s, Dr Pepper played a critical role in keeping the soft drink industry afloat during World War II. At the time, the U.S. government issued restrictions on essential resources, including sugar, which threatened to shut down production of the beverage. A scientific study showed that the body’s energy levels dipped around 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., at which times workers could boost their energy with a soft drink—hence the famous “10-2-4” slogan.

This argument helped prove that soft drinks could help keep war plant employees energized, therefore allowing production to continue. Amid the challenges of the war, Dr Pepper and the soft drink industry stood strong, ensuring access for consumers and preventing a shutdown that would have reshaped the industry.

A Legacy of Flavor Innovation

Dr Pepper has never shied away from pushing the boundaries of flavor. In 1962, it launched Sugar-Free Dr Pepper, which later became Diet Dr Pepper, offering the same signature taste with fewer calories. In 1982, a caffeine-free version, known as Pepper Free, joined the portfolio and expanded its appeal to a broader audience.

The 2000s ushered in an era of bold experimentation, with limited-time flavors that generated buzz and excitement including Dr Pepper Berries & Cream, FANtastic Chocolate and most recently Creamy Coconut.

But Dr Pepper doesn’t just dabble in limited-time offerings. Our talented employees carefully craft flavors destined to be permanent additions, such as Dr Pepper & Cream Soda, Cherry, and our newest fan favorite, Blackberry, combining the original 23 flavors of Dr Pepper with the rich sweetness of blackberry flavor.

A Future Fueled by Flavor

The history of Dr Pepper is defined by bold ideas and flavors that stand the test of time. With each new addition, the brand continues to push the boundaries of taste, offering consumers options that keep their love for Dr Pepper going strong. As we mark 140 years of flavor innovation, one thing is clear—Dr Pepper will always delight fans with its one-of-a-kind taste.
